How Nigerian Creators Can Monetize on Facebook with Ads

Great news for Nigerian influencers: as of mid‑2024, Facebook (Meta) opened its monetization tools to creators in Nigeria.

With 5,000+ followers and engaging video content, you can now earn money from ads on your Page or profile.

The key is meeting Facebook’s eligibility and policy rules, then activating ad features in Creator Studio or Professional Dashboard. This guide walks you through the steps, requirements, ad formats, and tips to grow your Facebook earnings.

Who’s Eligible in Nigeria

Meta announced in July 2024 that Nigerian (and Ghanaian) creators with the right criteria can start earning from Facebook video and Reel content. To qualify for ad monetization, you must:

  • Residency & Age: Live in Nigeria and be at least 18 years old.
  • Followers: Have a minimum of 5,000 followers on your Facebook Page (or on your profile if using Professional Mode).
  • View Time: Accumulate at least 60,000 minutes of video views on your Page in the past 60 days.
  • Active Videos: Maintain at least five active videos on your Page. These are public videos (live or recorded) with audiences.
  • Content Compliance: Follow all of Facebook’s Partner Monetization Policies and Content Monetization Policies. Only original, community‑friendly content qualifies.

Meeting all these requirements unlocks Creator Studio’s monetization options. Once eligible, you can apply through Creator Studio and start earning from ads placed in your videos.

Setting Up Your Page or Profile

Pages: If you run a Facebook Page (for a brand or public figure), be the admin. Make sure the Page is public, has a clear profile/cover photo, and contains some posted videos. Then log into Meta Business Suite with your Facebook account.

Profiles (Professional Mode): If you use a personal profile to post content, switch on Professional Mode. On the Facebook app, go to your profile, tap Professional Dashboard, and turn on Professional Mode. Once it’s on, the Professional Dashboard will show you a Monetization or Brand Collabs Manager section where you can track eligibility and earnings.

In both cases, fill out your bio, add contact info, and link any business accounts. A complete, public presence builds trust with Facebook’s system and your audience.

Activating In-Stream (Video) Ads

If your Page/profile meets the criteria, you can enable in-stream ad breaks on your videos:

  1. Go to Creator Studio (Meta Business Suite) and select your Page.
  2. Open Monetization Tab. You’ll see options like In-Stream Ads or Ad Breaks.
  3. Apply or Turn On Ads. If eligible, you’ll see a button to set up Ad Breaks.
  4. Insert Ad Breaks in Videos. Edit your videos to insert ad breaks. For future videos, ads will be placed automatically based on your settings.

When you upload new videos (ideally 3+ minutes long), Facebook splits them and inserts ads at break points. More watch time means more ad revenue.

Monetizing Facebook Reels

To earn from Reels:

  • Enable Reels Ads. Look for Ads on Facebook Reels in your Monetization tab or Professional Dashboard.
  • Create Original Reels. Post engaging Reels (up to 90 seconds) with original content.
  • Let Ads Run. Facebook inserts ads automatically in between Reel clips or after repeat views.

Reels ads include overlay banners and short ads between videos. You earn based on performance.

Checking Your Monetization Status

You can always check if you’re eligible or how your monetization is going:

  • In Creator Studio, under Monetization, check your eligibility status.
  • In Professional Dashboard on mobile, go to Monetization or Ad Tools.

If you hit the required metrics, your status updates and new options appear.

Ad Formats Explained

Facebook offers several ad formats:

  • In-Stream Video Ads: These are video ads placed before, during, or after your long-form videos.
  • Reels Ads: These include overlay banners or short ads between Reels.
  • Other Ads: Facebook may add new formats over time.

Enable both video and Reels ads to increase your earnings potential.

Tips to Boost Earnings and Engagement

Here’s how to maximize your reach and revenue:

  • Post Regularly: Upload videos consistently to boost engagement and watch time.
  • High-Quality Content: Use clear video and audio. Hook viewers within the first few seconds.
  • Engage Your Audience: Respond to comments and create interactive content.
  • Diversify Monetization: Explore Stars, Subscriptions, and brand partnerships alongside ads.
  • Stay Informed: Watch out for new tools, updates, and Facebook policy changes.
  • Analyze and Adapt: Use insights to track your best-performing videos and refine your content.
